Hey there I'm relatively new with dice and paper rpgs. I've played AD&D once but that's just about it. I was wondering how does someone start with GURPS? Im also really wanting to do a Fallout campaign, any tips or books i should get for that?
GURPS can be an intimidating system if you don’t approach it with the right attitude. The only 2 books you need are Basic Set Character and Basic Set Campaigns, and for Fallout there is an online .pdf that I find helpful. You can find it at this link: GURPS_Fallout_compilation. I used this as a jumping point for my ideas.
Now the thing to remember about GURPS is that there’s a rule you can use for any situation but if you try to use them all you will go crazy. It’s best if you pick what rules you want beforehand to make it a fun game. I personally try to use as few rules as I can while preserving game balance, and anything else that takes too much time I make the judgement call as the GM.
When creating a character the GM should be involved to make sure he fits the setting correctly or you may get some crazy things, but in Fallout I guess you can make crazy work. Since there is a huge list of skills I’d only allow the useful ones in a game or reference to the rule for Wild Card skills to avoid confusion.
GURPS is like a tool box and the rules are the tools. In life you don’t need every tool in a tool box in order to get something done well…so remember the rules are more like guidelines and the important thing is to have fun and not feel bogged down by it. It’s the biggest rookie mistake, I think.
As someone just starting out it might not be a bad idea to play a short game using just the ultra-light rule book to help get a quick understanding of the concepts and flow of GURPS.
The very first time we played gurps we played Zombietown USA with just the ultra-light rule book and it was really worked well at getting us immersed in the campaign and the system itself. I assume there are pre-made fallout style campaigns as well.
The ultralight rules are a free download http://www.warehouse23.com/products/SJG37-0032
And if you are interested you can get Zombietown USA here for three bucks http://www.warehouse23.com/products/SJG30-6103 after the dozens of campaigns we’ve played since it is still one of my favourites.
